Houston Latino Film Festival celebrates Día de los Muertos at 14 Pews

The Houston Latino Film Festival presents Cine de Muertos, a festival composed of films, live music, live literature readings and more! Join us for a weekend to enjoy films from around the world representative of the themes celebrated during Día de los Muertos (film schedule can be found below). The Houston Latino Film Festival is happy to be hosted by 14 Pews (800 Aurora St). Everyone is welcome to stay after for a post-screening social and FREE drinks, popcorn and pan dulce! (*while supplies last).

LIVING ALTARS

Synopsis:
Living Altars is a remarkably intimate short film by directing duo Peggy Peralta and Lourdes Figueroa portraying wearable Day of the Dead altars of two artists, Marie-Astrid Do-Rodriguez and Eli Reyes in their Covid-19 era living installations. The visually stunning film depicts the artists wearing their altars, created with mixed folk arts media while narrating stories of family, grief and consolation.

Synopsis:
Lucia, a doctor who is emotionally destroyed after being suspended from the hospital where she worked, receives an unexpected emotional twist that makes her see life differently.

Synopsis:

Synopsis:
After a lifetime together, Susana has been abandoned by her husband. She is in denial and holds on to the past. Synopsis:
When ex-skateboarder Lucas’ (Pedro Correa) estranged father dies and leaves him a Los Angeles apartment complex, the young slacker travels there from Reno with a plan to sell the building and forget the man he believes abandoned him. But the apartment’s tenants—including Frank (Raymond Cruz), the longtime superintendent who isn’t buying Lucas’ tough exterior, and Sophie (Courtney Dietz), a young woman who, like Lucas, isn’t sure what she wants from life—remember his dad as a different man from the one Lucas imagined.

THE COW WHO SANG A SONG INTO THE FUTURE

Synopsis:
When thousands of fish die in a polluted river in southern Chile, Magdalena, a woman long-deceased, emerges amongst their lifeless bodies. Magdalena encounters her widowed husband, sending him into a state of shock and prompting the return of their daughter, Cecilia. Magdalena’s presence and her effect on the environment stirs curiosity and fear among her family. As the past comes into focus, mother and daughter are met with the opportunity to change the future.
