María García, heir of a traditional tequila factory in Los Altos de Jalisco highlands, struggles to keep her plant afloat in a market increasingly dominated by foreign corporations. She hires Rafaela, a new director, who revives her hopes of surviving the myriad crises. When a plague and flood cause irreversible damage to María’s already limited agave plantation, she finds herself forced to take a stance against the foreign pressure intent on strangling her business – and part of her identity with it.
About The Director
Juan Pablo González has directed the short films Por qué el recuerdo (2014), presented at the Cannes Semaine de la Critique; La espera (2016), shown at South by Southwest and Jury Prize for Best Short Film at New Orleans Festival, and Las nubes (2017), screened at Rotterdam Festival, as well as the documentary Caballerango (2018), premiered at the IDFA in Amsterdam. He has won the FONCA scholarships and his films have received support from the Sundance Institute, IMCINE, Tribeca Film Institute and Venice Biennale. He won the Vilcek Foundation Prize in 2021.
