A Backyard for My Grandchildren to Play

Synopsis

Having fled Venezuela, my partner and I find ourselves in a poor-conditioned boarding house. Along with recently-arrived Graciela & Maria Martha, we explore how it feels to live in a place where no one wants to be.

About the Director, Pedro Moreno

Pedro Moreno was born in Mérida, Venezuela, where he attended film school at the Universidad de Los Andes. In 2016 as part of his dissertation essay, he produced a short film using still images about the healthcare crisis in the Andes area. Fleeing the Venezuelan humanitarian crisis in 2018, adapting to his new surroundings as a migrant, he produced “A Backyard for my Grandchildren to Play”, about the boarding house that serves as refuge. He focuses on producing intimate, close-to-the-chest type of stories.


Water

Mexico / 2020 / 15 min / Drama / Texas Premiere

Synopsis

Camilo, a teenage rower from a traditional pier in Xochimilco, is secretly exploring his sexual desires with another man. One day he thinks Beto, a fellow rower, has discovered him. When Camilo confronts him, he ends up accidentally unveiling his homosexuality. Shocked, Camilo reacts violently and decides to flee from Xochimilco.

About the Director, Santiago Domínguez Zermeño

Originally from Mexico City, Santiago arrived at the cinema after going through still photography, mathematics and social sciences. In 2009 he was awarded a scholarship by the United World Colleges organization to study two years in Maharashtra, India. Originally a cinematographer, his collaborations have led him to work in productions in the United States, Peru, India and Mexico. He is currently in the fifth year of Film Directing in the Cinematographic Training Center.


Captian Blackbeard

Mexico / 2020 / 15 min / Historical Drama & Horror / Texas Premiere

Synopsis

At the beginning of the Mexican Revolution, Isabella, a girl who role-plays as Captain Blackbeard, notices that her parents’ hacienda is about to be overrun. With the certainty that she could help her family, Isabella goes in search of reinforcements. In her way, nonetheless, she will discover the horror of the armed conflict.

About the Director, Mateo Granillo

Mateo Granillo is a Mexican filmmaker. He studied ‘Film Direction’ at Centro de Capacitación Cinematográfica A.C. (CCC) where he graduated with honorific mention. He has directed the short-movies “What is time?” (Documentary in post production), “Captain Blackbeard” (2020) and “Necropolis, they will be ashes but still will feel” (2016). This last one was selected in several film festivals around the globe.

Shedding Skin

Synopsis

Alicia (39) has not been comfortable with her body since she was mastectomized due to breast cancer. After a domestic unexpected event, she meets her new neighbor Lucia, a transsexual woman who will help her in her rediscovery and acceptance process.

About the Director, Katherina Harder Sacre

Katherina is a Film and TV director, graduated from the University of Chile with a Master degree in Film Directing at Bande á Part school in Barcelona. Co-Founder and Director of the Iquique International Film Festival – FICIQQ, which has 13 years of existence. Director of the award-winning short film “Guiding Sights” (original title “Memorias del viento”) winner as Best Short Film at FICValdivia 2011 and selected in more than 35 international festivals including FICGuadalajara, DocumentaMadrid, Huesca, FIC Monterrey, Camerimage, among others.


Bad Seed

Synopsis

A couple cultivates seemingly infertile ground. One day they find a dark seed on the soil. That seed will grow and become a strange influence on their behavior.

About the Director, Guilherme Daniel

Guilherme Daniel studied applied mathematics before going to Film School. There he graduated in Cinematography with a minor in Directing. Since 2012 he has worked in film and advertisement, first as a camera assistant and then as a cinematographer. He also writes and produces short-films from 2013 on, having directed four of them: 2017: “The Silence and Afterwards” (2017), “The Strange House in the Mist” (2018), “Bad Seed” (2019), and “The Abyss of the Soul” (2021).


Where is the Governor?

Mexico / 2021 / 10 min / Comedy / Houston Premiere

Synopsis

Where is the Governor? follows the robbery of the State funds by the Governor himself. Only J Guzman will be able to save the State of Chihuahua from bankruptcy, or is the Mexican corruption greater than any hope in this world?

About the Director, Carlos Tejada

Carlos “Cabe” Tejeda is a border director that started at the theater and dramaturgy, when he was the director of the plays “Viviendo Entre Muertos” and the romantic comedy “Como sal y pimienta”. He made his transition to film when he decided to study animation and digital cinema at NMSU (New Mexico State University). In 2017 he ended his thesis with the short film “Duck a Cola”, an animated film that was presented at Las Cruces International Film Festival, El Paso Film Festival and Southern Arizona Independent Film Festival, and also won the best short film.


Teo

Chile / 2021 / 18 min / Science-Fiction / Houston Premiere

Synopsis

A couple goes to design their first child to a gene-editing clinic, hoping that the kid will have the successful and happy life that has eluded them.

About the Director, Belen Abarza

Bachelor of Arts, theater director, set designer and illuminator. She has participated in more than 50 plays, dance and performing arts as a stage designer with various chilean theater companies, collaborating with prominent national directors. She has been recognized for her work in Prague Cuadrienale PQ2007; Victor Jara Dramatic Festival; New Directors Festival; American Dramatic Festival, Queen’s Festival; Children Mess Bosnia i Herzegovina; Ceres Award and Best Design in Art Critics Circle 2018. Her incursion in cinema starts with her co-direction of the short film “Theo”.
